Can I apply Webnames Privacy to only some of the domains under one Registrant and not to other domains?

For .CA domains, you may choose to enable or disable privacy.
This means that if an individual registrant has 2 .coms, 2.nets and 2.ca domains, you will be charged for the .com and .net domains, but have the option to choose privacy on the .ca domains (since CIRA provides a level of privacy for individual .ca's). If you choose Yes for the .ca, privacy is applied to ALL the .ca’s under that registrant or if NO, privacy will not be applied to ALL the .ca’s under that registrant.
If you are a "non-individual" i.e. corporation or other legal types - The privacy service for non-individuals is applied at the registrant level and you will be charged for all domains, excluding .US.
This means that if a company registrant has 2 .coms, 2.nets and 2.ca domains, you will be charged for all domains.
In order to have some domains with privacy and some without, you will have to separate these domains into different Registrants by completing a Registrant Transfer.

Sunrise registrations are the very first domain names that will be submitted to the registry for live registration. If you have a trademark or rights for the domain name you want to register, you are encouraged to register at this stage, as it will give you the absolute best chance of beating the competition to your domain name.
Land Rush Registration
This type of registration is for customers who do not have a trademark, but want to get the next best chance of successfully registering their domain name. When there are two or more applicants for the same domain name, applicants will be entered into an auction.

The domain has already been successfully registered during land rush.

Additional Important information about .DE domain names:
Transit: TRANSIT is the name that DENIC gives to a procedure, which makes sure that a domain holder does not lose his/her domain if it ceases to be administered by a DENIC member. You should understand a little about the background:
Usually, the request to register a domain is submitted to DENIC by a DENIC member acting on behalf of the customer. This DENIC member then goes on to handle all communications with DENIC concerning the domain on behalf of the domain holder. We call this administering the domain. If, for whatever reason, the DENIC member ceases to administer the domain, DENIC tries to get in touch directly with the domain holder as part of its TRANSIT procedure in order to ensure that it will be possible to have the domain administered in future by a DENIC member appointed by the domain holder. DENIC will send a letter to the domain holder and issues an individual password. The domain holder can now use this password on a personalized web page to indicate for each domain concerned:
- which DENIC member is to administer the domain in future;
- whether DENIC is to administer it itself through the service DENICdirect;
- or whether the domain is to be deleted.
This procedure ensures that the rights of domain holders to their domains are safeguarded.

The event was the first addition of major gTLDs since the Domain Name System was developed in the 1980s. -
What is a .TEL domain name and why should I have one?
The domain name .tel is a top-level domain (TLD) in the Domain Name System (DNS) of the Internet. It was approved by ICANN as a sponsored top-level domain, and is operated by Telnic. Telnic announced in January 2011 that over 300,000 domains had been registered since the start of general availability on March 24, 2009.The domain's purpose is to provide a single name space for Internet communications services. Subdomain registrations serve as a single point of contact for individuals and businesses, providing a global contact directory service by hosting all types of contact information directly in the Domain Name System, without the need to build, host or manage a traditional web service. Additionally, as of July 2010, every tel domain acts as an OpenID and an increasing number of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) clients can address a tel domain name directly.
-
Why is .Tel different than other Top Level Domains (TLDs)?
The value of a .Tel domain lies with the ability to host personal or corporate contact information directly in the DNS, which can then be universally accessible. This stands in contrast to the typical use of the DNS for other TLDs, in which the DNS only provides a mapping between domain names and IP addresses.

Upon the successful change of Registrant, the expiration date of the domain will not be modified.
-
Why can I not update certain fields pertaining to my .XXX Registrant?

How can I have my site listed on a search engine?
In most cases, you need to sign up to a search engine before it ranks your site. For example, if you want to have your site listed on google, you would need to add your site to their database. In order to do this, please follow these simple steps:
Before submitting the site, quickly read the “How do I get a good ranking on a search engine?” FAQ below.
- Go to http://www.google.com
- Click on “About Google” at the bottom of the page.
- Under the section with the yellow heading “For Site Owners”, click on the link that says “Submitting Your Site”.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
-
How do I get a good ranking on a search engine?
The answer to this question will vary quite a bit, and we suggest that you take a look at some online documentation like the webmaster info at searchenginewatch.com http://searchenginewatch.com/webmasters/
Getting a good ranking depends on several factors; however we will list some of the important things to remember:
- Ensure your web page has text or paragraphs relevant to your topic, which carries well formulated keywords.
- Make sure your page has a title. You can edit this in the “Site Options” section of the web builder editor.
- Frames can sometimes cause difficulties for search engines, so when you submit your site, you may want to submit it without the frame. You can do this by entering your site’s address as this example:
http://www.stansflowers.ca/splash.asp - Note the added /splash.asp at the end of the URL. This is the index file of your site, and when you specify it, the frame that is standard on web builder sites is no longer in use.
Should you need more information about how google ranks websites, go back to the “For Site Owners” section, and click on the “Webmaster Info” link. Google provides documentation and general guidelines you can use to ensure your site is listed better.

Can I link to internal files on my site?
It is possible to link to internal files, or even to specific paragraphs on your website, but to do so will require you to use the HTML editor. HTML knowledge and understanding is required.
As an example, if you wanted to create a link to a specific image file on your website, you would first need to know the “relative” path of that image. As a general rule, web builder images are kept under the relative path: images/
- When adding a link to this image, you would then select the test or image which will be the link.
- Click on the link tool button. Enter the relative path “images/filename.jpg” in the “External Link” field.
- Select whether the link will open in a new window, or in the same window from the “Target” drop down menu.
- Click on “Insert Link”.
If you are going to insert anchor tags to specific paragraphs of your site, you will need to edit the HTML code and add the anchor to the target section you want to link to.
For example:

What is SSL?
SSL is an acronym for Secure Sockets Layer. It is used for securely transmitting data via the Internet. SSL uses a cryptographic system that uses two keys to encrypt data − a public key known to everyone and a private or secret key known only to the recipient of the message. Many websites, including those that utilize ecommerce or facilitate banking transactions use the protocol to transmit confidential user information, such as credit card numbers. By convention, URLs that require an SSL connection start with https: instead of http:
-
What is an SSL certificate?
SSL Certificates are created for a particular server and domain, and are issued by trusted, third-party Certificate Authority (CA) - comparable to your passport. As the Certification Authority, the SSL Certificate vendor authenticates the identity of the purchaser and verifies the business that owns the domain.
-
What is a Certificate Signing Request (CSR)?
A CSR also known as Certificate Signing Request file which is generated on the physical web server that validates the server-specific information about the server and the organization which owns the applicable domain.
Typically, the following Organizational information is required in order to generate the CSR via the physical web server.
- Organization name
- Organizational unit
- Common name*
- Country code
- State or province
- City or locality
*Common name
If you wish to secure “www.mydomain.ca”, then you will need to enter the exact host “www” and domain name in this field. If you enter “mydomain.ca” then the Certificate issued to you will only work for the domain name “mydomain.ca”. It will cause an error when someone accesses the domain name as “www.mydomain.ca”.
CSR keys are typically obtained by contacting hosting provider for the respective website. If access to the physical web server or web-based control panel is possible, a CSR key can likely be generated directly without assistance.
A sample CSR key appears below:

What are the primary differences between the different types and brands of SSL Certificate?
There are two primary variations between all SSL Certificates: The Certificate Authority (CA) who issues the certificate, and the depth in which the application for the Certificate by the customer is reviewed and validated.
Brand: The Brand of SSL Certificate directly affects who the CA of the certificate will be. This can have some technical implications, but primarily can affect your site visitor’s behaviors based on their perceptions of each CA’s reputation in the industry.
Type: The Type of SSL Certificate purchased will dictate the thoroughness in which the application details are verified. The more expensive Certificates undergo a stringent manually verification process prior to issuance. Each Type of Certificate includes a different Site Seal for inclusion on the applicable website. This Site Seal will reflect the validation process that was employed, thus providing site visitors additional assurance of the validity and security of the website itself.
Additional Information
Wildcard Certificates
A wildcard certificate may be used for situations where several same-domain web sites need to be secured but the hostnames or sub-domains vary. Per our certificate licensing agreement, you can secure as many sub-domains on one physical sever as you would like with the wildcard product as long as they share the same second level domain name. In order for you to do this, the domain/common name in the CSR would need to be "*.mydomain.com". The asterisk is a place holder and enables you to secure different sub-domains that share the same base/second level domain name such as "mydomain.com" in our example. If you need to secure sub-domains on multiple servers, you will need to purchase separate wildcards for each server. Here is an example of sub-domains with the same second level domain:
o www.mydomain.com
o w1.mydomain.com
o secure.mydomain.com
o test.mydomain.com
o trash.mydomain.com
All of these have the same second level domain "mydomain.com" but different hostnames. One wildcard certificate of the form " *.mydomain.com " could serve all these web sites.
The wildcard is really useful in situations like the above or when the web hosting service puts customer branding as the host name but all of them will have the same domain. For example: A Web Hosting Service offers its Fortune 500 clients a convenient shopping mydomain cart with their own brand name –
cnn.mydomain.com
pepsi.mydomain.com
fordmotorcompany.mydomain.com
amazon.mydomain.com
fedex.mydomain.com
compusa.mydomain.com
jspennys.mydomain.com
sears.mydomain.com
All of these individualized web sites can be secured with the one and same wildcard of the form:
*. mydomain.com
Wildcards can also have more than three fields, such as:
* . * . domain . com
* . * . * . * . *. domain . com
etc.
But, if you get a 5-field wildcard, then it only works for 5-field web sites.
If you are running IIS, you cannot get a multi-asterisk wildcard but you can get a single asterisk wildcard.
Extended Validation (EV) Certificates
Extended Validation or "EV" is the new standard developed and agreed upon by the major Certificate Authorities and the major browser vendors to authenticate and issue next-generation SSL Certificates.
EV SSL Certificates help protect your site from phishing scams and assure your customers that they are dealing with a business or organization that has been thoroughly checked out using the New EV standard.
An EV SSL certificate triggers high-security web browsers to display your organization's name in a green address bar, and to show the name of the Certificate Authority that issued it.
The Certificate Authority authenticates websites with an audited, rigorous methodology.
Online shoppers recognize the green address bar as an easy and reliable way to verify site identity and security. It provides an instant visual queue that your site is a trusted site and has met rigorous EV authentication standards. Higher trust leads to increased conversions and more business for you.

What happens when I renew my SSL certificate?
When renewing your SSL certificate, you will be provided the option to re-use the configuration data from last year, or to provide new configuration data. SSL Certificate renewals are really just re-purchases, with the option to re-use the configuration data as a convenience.
If none of your configuration data has changed (server details, contact details), then re-using the same configuration is advisable and advantageous as the issuance of your SSL certificate will likely be expedited by the CA.
If any information has changed since last renewal, use the option to submit new configuration data.
NOTE: The following Server types require a new CSR to be used for each installation, and this the option for re-using configuration data is not applicable and not available : All versions of Microsoft’s IIS server, Tomcat servers, All Java based servers .
-
When is an SSL Certificate valid from?
An SSL Certificate is valid from the date of issuance until its expiration date. The date of expiration will be on the anniversary date of the Certificate’s issuance.
-
If an SSL Certificate is renewed early will there be any loss to the validity period?
A certificate goes through several stages prior to issuance: Purchase / Renewal, Configuration, Validation and finally Issuance. A certificate becomes valid from the point in time it is issued, and thus it will expire on the anniversary of its date of issuance, not the date on which the purchase occurred.
The certificate may therefore be purchased, or renewed prior to its renewal date, without penalty.
For early renewals, certificates can be renewed and issued up to 90 days in advance of the original expiration date without penalty. The renewal term will be added to the original expiration date.
-
Refunds
An SSL Certificate may be cancelled and refunded at any time prior to issuance, and within the first seven (7) days after issuance. No refunds are available after this point in time.
-
How is a CSR key generated?
Please see our SSL Configuration and Installation Guide for more information on the process of generating or obtaining a CSR key.
-
Why do I get an "Invalid CSR" error when submitting an order?
There are a number or reasons why a CSR will be rejected by our ordering page. Listed below are some of the most common reasons a CSR might be rejected.
-The common name contained in the CSR is not a fully qualified domain name. Make sure when you generate your CSR it contains the fully qualified domain name of the site that you are trying to secure (i.e. the domain name that would be displayed in the URL of the site you are trying to secure such as www.webnames.ca).
-If the CSR was generated on an Apache server, an optional challenge password may have been entered. When generating the CSR makes sure you leave the challenge password blank.
-There are illegal characters in one of the fields of the CSR. Make sure the following characters are not in any of the fields in the CSR: < > ~ ! @ # $ % ^ * / \ ( ) ?.,&. Also international characters will usually cause a problem.
-Entire CSR is not entered into the form. Make sure that you include the entire CSR when pasting it into the form, this includes everything from the first 5 dashes before BEGIN NEW CERTIFICATE REQUEST through the last 5 dashes after END NEW CERTIFICATE REQUEST.
If you have checked all of the these problems and you are still not able to submit your CSR please feel free to contact us at 1-866-221-7878 or by email
support@webnames.ca

Can I submit a 1028 bit or 2048 bit CSR key?
For the purposes of increased security, the requirements established by the Certificate Authority Browser Forum for Extended Validation Certificates now state that a minimum of 2048-bit CSR keys must be utilized for certificates that expire after December 31st, 2010.
Reflective of this, Webnames.ca will require all CSR key submissions for certificates that will have a future renewal date of after December 31st, 2010 to utilize 2048 bits. The vast majority of fully-patched server platforms will be able to generate 2048-bit CSR keys without issue.
We encourage all administrators responsible for existing SSL Certificates to ensure that their server platforms are patched and/or upgraded as necessary well in advance of their SSL Certificate renewal date.
Please see SP 800-57 at http://csrc.nist.gov/publications/PubsSPs.html for additional background regarding this change.
-
Why does the validation process differ from one SSL Certificate type to another?
SSL Certificate Validation can take anywhere from 10 minutes to several days. Each type of Certificate has its own validation process and timeline. This validation process (and the resulting Site Seal) is one of the primary differences between all SSL Certificates. SSL Certificates which are quickly validated and issued, will be done so via carefully monitored automated processes, while the Certificates requiring more time for validation will be manually audited by a Security Analyst. The applicant will also be asked to supply additional documentation as part of the validation process.
To maintain the integrity and security of the validation process, as well as to prevent exploits, the exact validation process and requirements for each Certificate type are never disclosed.
-
What is an approval email and why is it needed?
The validation processes of many SSL Certificates utilize an Approval Email process, by which the validity of the order is first established. The initial email address which is selected for this process is taken from the admin email address of the domain as per a WHOIS lookup. It is therefore important that the true admin email address not be obscured by a 3rd-party domain privacy service.
As an alternative to the existing admin email address, one of several generic email addresses may be selected during the Configuration process. These addresses are all generic in nature, however at least one should already exist and be accessible to the individual responsible for the domain. For security reasons, custom or individualized approval email address recipients are not possible.
